The only recognition of the men of Wanborough who gave their lives in the two World Wars are marble plaques in St Andrew's church and it has been suggested it would be appropriate to mark the celebrations next May by erecting a memorial cross in Wanborough.

Whether a memorial is erected or not research is being done on the lives of the men listed on the church plaques.

1914 - 1918

1939 - 1945

With no census records to help the lives of these five men are difficult to trace.

There is no trace of Harry Gleed in military records but Albert Henry Gleed died in France in 1944 and his parents were Albert and Ada Gleed of Wanborough. Is this the same person?

Similarly there is no trace of George Pickering but there was an Albert Edward Pickering who is listed as the foster-son of Mrs P Smith of Upper Wanborough.

George Wild has also proved elusive in military records.

There is a separate plaque for Charles Todd who parents lived near Reading and whose wife Elsie Anne came from Lotmead, Wanborough.

Could this be Elsie Anne Wiseman the sister of Bruce Wiseman who lived at Lotmead and listed on the top section of the memorial?

There is also a memorial to William Gosling VC in the church who was born at Somerset Farm and is well documented.
